Finding the Next Fashion Designer

Design Contestant of Promgirl.net Facebook

There is so much unnoticed talent from strangers that you pass every day.  People around the world have talent to write, sing, design, etc.  but are never given the opportunity to share their gifts.  Giving them the opportunity to express themselves is the first step to finding the next designer.  Promgirl.net started a design competition on Facebook and within a few days there were dress designs that would impress Valentino, Marchesa or even Vera Wang.

Most sketches were presented in black and white, which left room to create the colors and fabrics in our own minds.  The dress I chose to feature reminded me of someone who was elegant and beautiful at any age.  If I was a stylist, I would have chosen Charlize Theron to wear this on a red carpet.  This would be the essence of beauty if it was done in luxurious silk chiffon.  The color is what would make this design stand out.  I can’t help but picture this gown in pale pink or soft silver.  I love the way the fabric cascades down the skirt, so a stunning stiletto would be a must!

Don’t be afraid to share your skills!  If you are afraid of rejection or don’t have the courage to share your talents, I have one suggestion for you….TRY!  If you are thinking of auditioning for the role in the town play or joining a sports team or entering your design in a competition, you never know what could happen unless you try.  Success comes from going for something!  Promgirl.net may not have a million dollar prize but we sure appreciate the talent that presented to us from our friends on Facebook.  Who knows, you might just be the next Fashion Designer!

Summer Makeup Tips – Vol. 1

Good Morning! And what a beautiful morning it is – summer is here, cancer’s are astrologically in power mode, and it may be time to change up your makeup regime – well that one may not sound as positive as the preceding two, but it is the truth. Inconvenient or not, as the weather changes and the temperature rises, your skin needs to be treated differently. Products are always being advertised as new and good-for-you, but how do you know which ones really are the best? An easy answer is, only you know yourself best, and you should know what your skin and body require, but there are some thing s that well, pretty much every girl should own – or at least have the knowledge that such products and items exist.

Today’s topic will focus on concealer:

With such a lovely change in times, most likely your daily schedule has changed too; no more school, no more homework, no more stress. As your schedule begins to lighten up, we are given more time to go out at night and inevitably, stay out later. Of course, this leads to the possibility of more dark circles and possibilities for imperfections – such as the dreaded, heat and sweat caused acne. The best way to fix these minor issues is with concealer. Now, there are many different kinds, types, and levels of concealer and finding the best one is usually a trial and error or a past down secret from mother to daughter or friend to friend. But, to make your life easier (as if summer hasn’t done that on its own) I’ve narrowed it down. A great makeup company and one you could always fall back on when in doubt is MAC. Their line is a classic staple for any fashionista but beware, with all the products MAC offers, it is easy to go overboard. Their Studio Finish Concealer is a “lightweight creamy formula,” which like all of MAC’s products are long lasting – something necessary in the long summer days that all too often become nights. A huge plus about this product is that it also contains a SPF of 35. This amongst all things is very important for women of all ages, especially when the sun is shining as it does in these beautiful months.

Looking to Trim Down for the Beach? Then Avoid a Liquid Cleanse

With summer officially here, and temperatures across large chunks of the U.S. jumping into the triple digit range, the time to hit the beach has definitely arrived. And as always, worries about swimsuit fits, cellulite and unsightly flab are coming along for the ride. With precious little time left before that trip to the shore many of us who have yet to shed as many pounds as we would like are starting to look for a fast track option. However before you grab that Master Cleanse or one of its competitors from the shelf you may want to read what a group of experts had to say to New Beauty Magazine about the benefits and risks of a liquid cleanse.

For example according to San Francisco nutritionist Rania Batayneh, “The body naturally detoxifies itself through the lungs, skin, liver and kidneys, so to do a juice cleanse or any other liquid cleanse is really unnecessary if you’re putting the proper nutrients in your body. The reality is that most people end up gaining the weight back.”

Ugh, depressing. And sadly the bad news does not end there, Ms. Batayneh and other nutritionists interviewed for the piece detail how the lack of protien taken in during a cleanse can actually slow your bodies metabolism, making it HARDER to loose the weight. Then you have to worry about the increased risk of binge eating once your free of the cleanse and about the fact that once you’ve committed to doing a cleanse stopping half-way through because of lack of willpower can leave you worse off than if you never started to begin with.

Long story short most liquid cleanses and the weight-loss they promise sound to good to be true because they are. So keep hitting the gym, ordering the salad and turning down the desert tray for now, rest assured you won’t be the only one. And if we ever do find a magic bullet for quick weight loss, don’t worry, we’ll post it here!

Prom dresses tips

Prom Tips for Choosing a Prom Dress That is Right for You

One of the most exciting events of your high school years, prom night is an occasion many young women dream about. When searching for prom dresses, it pays to be selective. Here are a few prom tips that might be helpful as you head off on your pursuit for the ultimate ensemble. Just a few details can be the deciding factor in finding the dress of your dreams, or becoming a fashion disaster.

Prom Tips for Finding the Perfect Dress

Where are the best places to look on your quest for the ideal prom dress? As classic and retro dress styles are projected to be big hits for the Prom 2008 season, vintage clothing stores and second hand shops are some of the best spots to shop for prom attire. A benefit to vintage shopping is the affordability; it is much more affordable to buy a second hand dress than to purchase a brand-new gown. Here is an essential prom tip: When planning a vintage shopping trip, allow plenty of time to visit many stores. Don’t end your adventure until you have found the dress you want, and are completely satisfied.

The internet has become a realm for fashion enthusiasts, and can eliminate a lot of time spent traveling from shop to shop. There are now also several online dress boutiques that specialize in prom and formal wear. Here is a prom tip you will not want to forget; you can save tons of money by shopping online. Even if you need alterations, many bridal or formal shops will do them as long as you schedule ahead of time. In the age of the World Wide Web, it is possible to find the perfect prom dresses without leaving the comfort of your own home!

Prom Tips for Selecting a Style That Flatters Your Figure

One of the most important prom tips is to select a prom dress that is flattering to your figure. Prom dresses that hides your imperfections and accentuates your assets is best. Every young woman wants to look outstanding on prom night, and selecting an ideal dress is the ultimate way to make prom night unforgettable.

One of the most popular current trends, ball gowns are the most formal and true to the prom culture of the early 1900s. Feminine and graceful, the ball gown is composed of a wide skirt and layers of tulle over taffeta. The ball gown defines royalty, and is perfect if you want to look and feel like a princess.

Halter prom dresses are another popular style for the Prom 2009 season. The halter dress style is flattering for all body types. One of the most essential prom tips involves the halter dress. A halter neckline will de-emphasize a larger bust line, while at the same time accentuating bare, elegant shoulders. If you want a sexier, sleeker style you should invest in a form-fitting sheath or mermaid style gown. These dresses accentuate all the right curves and can be topped off with long gloves. Are the halter and form fitting styles a bit too risqué for your tastes? Then select a dress with a short or three-quarter length sleeve. Tasteful and elegant, these styles are a timeless look and look beautiful on any figure.

Stay Stylish with These Spring and Summer Makeup Tips

May is just around the corner and for most of the U.S. the warm weather is already here, and judging by how hot it has gotten in the past couple weeks things probably won’t be cooling off again until it’s time to shop for the new fall looks. But warm weather means more than just fun in the sun; it means it’s time to think about changing your skin care and makeup regimen for the warmer months to come.
The best place to start looking for inspiration for your new style is the spring runways, which have featured very feminine and demure designs this year and paired those designs skillfully with soft, natural looks. Spring and summer makeup this year is going to be very subdued, with plenty of earthy blushes and natural flesh tones of shell, taupe and caramel. These colors paired with nude and cream colored lips and a modern matte finish create a very natural look that is flattering on almost every skin type. Remember to complement your style with a colorful and feminine short dress.
If you are feeling particularly bold one warm sunny day there are plenty of more daring statements to be made as well. For example neons are back with bright orange and tangerine colors leading the way. This color is perfect on the lips if you have a darker complexion or can be used for truly dramatic effect around the eyes. But remember that you have to make a choice, go heavy on the neons in both places and you’re only a bad perm away from looking like you fell out of an 80’s movie!
As always good skincare is a must in summer, and don’t forget to protect yourself with a good SPF if you plan on being out in the sun for long periods of time. Whichever look you decide to go with remember to stay away from the heavier products when makeup shopping this spring, thicker products tend to have much more grease which will crease and melt in the heat, not to mention wreak havoc on your pores.

And always remember spring and summer are about youth and natural beauty, so let be sure to accent your best features and remember that sometimes in fashion less is more.

Tips for finding your perfect prom look!

The search for your dream prom dress is exciting, but can be a little intimidating. With so many styles, silhouettes, and colors to choose from, it can be a bit overwhelming for prom girls! With these tips, you will have no problem finding your dream dress!

1. Research your prom look:

Prom is all about finding your perfect dress and the only way to do that is to do your research! A great place to start is the web. Prom dress sites like promgirl.net and 4prom.com offer a variety of dresses for you to choose from. Gather a list of styles, colors/prints, and cuts that you like. Once you have that, you can start deciding what your dream dress should look like.

2. Choose your silhouette:

Narrowing down your idea silhouette is the next step in choosing your prom dress. Start with the length: do you want a short dress for a funkier look or a long dress for a more classic prom look? If you can’t decide, then you can go with a dress with a removable skirt for two looks in one! After choosing your dress length, decide what type of silhouette that you want. A drop waist dress elongates and slims all body types, while a strapless sweetheart bodice is a youthful and fun prom look. Choosing a silhouette is an essential part of the prom dress search and once it is done, you can focus on the funnier part of your search!

3. Colors and Prints:

Choosing your dress color is the fun part of your prom search! Choose a color that expresses your personal style: if you want a unique trendy prom dress, go for a great purple, orange, or lime green. If you want a classic timeless look, go for a navy blue, black, or red prom dress. Prints are also another great way to go for your prom night. Many 2010 prom dresses feature great floral prints that are perfect for prom. You can also go for a classic but fun animal print, or try watercolor prints, which are very bohemian. When choosing your prom dress color go with a style that is all your own.

4. Details, Details, Details!

Once you have chosen your silhouette and color, now it’s time for the details! Many girls opt for sparkle for their prom dress. Rhinestone embellishments are a perfect choice for your prom dress! Whether they are at the waist, lower back, or bodice, they add fun into any prom look! Another great detail for your prom is appliqué! Floral appliqué is a popular choice this year for prom, whether it is flowers along the bottom of the skirt or along the entire dress! Floral appliqué are a flirty and fun addition to any prom dress!

5. Accessorize!

Now that you have your dream dress, it’s time to accessorize! Jewelry is a great touch to any prom look. If you’re dress is simple and elegant, a beautiful necklace will only add to the look. If you’re going for a printed dress or a look with an embellished bodice, simple earrings are all you need. Bracelets are the perfect accessories for any prom look, as they add class and elegance. Remember: accessories only add to the prom look and should not overpower your beautiful dress!

 6. CONFIDENCE!

The most important tip of all is to have confidence! Love what you’re wearing and choose a dress that fits you! Remember to have fun and that the best accessory and style of all is confidence!

Top Fashion Mistakes to Avoid at your Formal Affair

The top fashion mistakes at formal affairs don’t necessarily involve your gown; they involve your accessories. Ill-chosen accessories have the power to ruin your entire look, but you don’t have to fall prey.

Bulky bag. You may be tempted to bring your entire makeup kit, an extra pair of pantyhose and anything else you could conceivably need to meet any possible emergency the evening could bring. Don’t.

Such a practice will only end up in a major fashion faux pas, which is a big, bulky bag dragging down an elegant gown. Any bag with a strap will ruin the entire top of your dress and you cannot very well carry a bag as big as a bowling ball while still appearing elegant.

Crummy coat. Even if you only plan to wear your coat to dash from the car, those few moments can equal fashion suicide. Formal affairs deserve better than a puffy winter jacket thrown haphazardly over a glorious gown. Invest in a dressier coat that can work for your gown and other dressy affairs going forward. At the very least, go for a warm yet fashionable shawl.

Shoes. Shoe styles are not the most common footwear mistake for formal affairs; shoe comfort is. Test your shoes before the big event so you know you can dance or even walk in them. Go for fit, comfort and style, and there are plenty of shoes that provide all three features.

These accessory tips can help keep you fashionable, well-matched and free of blisters for many evenings to come!
