Trend Report

It’s a new year, which means it’s award season, which also means that the fabulous red carpet starlets are setting the precedent for the must have styles for current and upcoming prom seasons. All eyes are on the movers and shakers of the movie and music worlds, to see what their stylists decide to don them in so they can strut their stuff down the red carpet. A starlet’s dress can make or break their style status, just like your prom dress can make or break your night, so we all want to choose what’s right! Just from the Golden Globes alone, we can already spot some hot trends. Jennifer Lopez and Amy Adams both wore nude dresses, giving off a barely there illusion; whilst Salma Hayek and Sofia Vergara graced the scarlet carpet in black floor length gowns that sparkled. But one of the most refreshing trends was that of the printed gown!

The resurrection of prints and patterns was most prominent this past fall, a host of designs appeared on everything from t-shirts to pant suits. So, it is no surprise that the trend has finally trickled down and is slowly making an appearance on the red carpet. Kerry Washington donned an ethereal Giles gown that featured a horse printed skirt at the Django Unchained London premier, while Lucy Liu, Halle Berry, Ariel Winter and Sienna Miller all sported brightly printed frocks on the Golden Globes’ red carpet. From the pattern of pretty ladies adorned in printed and patterned creations thus far, we’re sure that the list will extend with the Oscars, Grammys and SAG Awards still set to air in the upcoming weeks.

Sundresses are hot for summer!

Sundresses are hot for summer!

Summer is a great time to show some skin.  With hot humid weather, the best way to dress is in light materials and minimal clothing.  Sundresses are essential for summer.  You can throw them on over a bathing suit, slip into one for dinner, or relax in one on your back porch.  No matter the occasion, a sundress is cute and comfortable.

Find a dress that is flattering on you.  As everyone knows, females are all different shapes and sizes.  If you are thinner, you have more options but don’t go with an oversized sundress or you will look frumpy.  If you are curvier, find a sundress with some support.  If you need the support on the top, they make sundresses with built in bras.  If you need the support through your mid-section, find one that wraps around your waist or is ruched so it will flatter your shape.  And no matter what your size or shape, having a flowing bottom always looks nice.

Don’t be afraid to try bright colors.  Neon’s are hotter than ever this summer.  If you have a tan, don’t be afraid to wear a bright yellow or electric lime sundress.  If neon’s don’t match your personality, try a bright turquoise blue or fantastic fuchsia.

Also, remember to accessorize!  No matter the color, great accessories can change the entire look of your sundress.  Do seashell accessories for a more casual beach look.  Or add some Swarovski chandeliers to take your day look into the evening.  Shoes are another great way to accessorize with your sundress.  Throw on a pair of flip flops and you are ready to run errands.  But you can take it a step further and throw on a pair of stilettos to go dance the night away.

There are so many fun ways you can wear a sundress.  Bust out your shades and flip flops and head to the mall.  You can find cute ones in all price ranges and sizes.  A sundress this summer is a must have, so be sure to have a few in your closet for any event that pops up!

Pointy Toed Shoes are Poppin!

Emma Stone wearing pointy stilettos

Shoes can make or break and outfit.  This season’s trend aim’s toward the pointy toed shoes!  Even though it is summer, celebrities on all the red carpets are sporting stilettos with fierce pointy toes.  Emma Stone has been caught on the red carpet tour for The Amazing Spider-Man wearing some sensational pointed shoes.  Gwen Stefani is never behind on her style.  She has some pointy toed high heels in her own L.A.M.B shoe collection and has been seen wearing them around town.   This shoe is getting hotter and hotter as summer goes on, so here is the low down on the wonderful pointy toed trend.

A stiletto that comes to a point can be flattering in many ways.  The first reason this look works is because it is a shoe style that elongates your legs.  You can be petite or tall and it will always make your legs looks stunning and longer than usual.  It will give you that extra inch, which will help you pull off more hemlines with your clothing choice.  Another reason that pointy toed shoes look fabulous is because they make a statement.  If you choose a high heel with a pointed toe, your shoes will pop!  You will catch everyone’s eye and it can make your outfit complete.  You can also find this style in a range of prices and colors.  If you are on a budget, you can pick up a pair of pointy toes for under $60.                                                                                       This is a shoe everyone can enjoy.

If you are afraid of this style shoe making your foot look too big, you’re wrong.  Be fashion forward next time you are shopping and choose a pointy toed shoe.  You can start with a basic color to work into your wardrobe, like nude or black.  Once you realize how awesome your pointed stilettos are you can work some funky ones in.  Step outside of the box with some neon’s, studs, or strappy pointed shoes.  Catch this trend because pointy toed shoes are poppin!

Finding the Next Fashion Designer

Design Contestant of Promgirl.net Facebook

There is so much unnoticed talent from strangers that you pass every day.  People around the world have talent to write, sing, design, etc.  but are never given the opportunity to share their gifts.  Giving them the opportunity to express themselves is the first step to finding the next designer.  Promgirl.net started a design competition on Facebook and within a few days there were dress designs that would impress Valentino, Marchesa or even Vera Wang.

Most sketches were presented in black and white, which left room to create the colors and fabrics in our own minds.  The dress I chose to feature reminded me of someone who was elegant and beautiful at any age.  If I was a stylist, I would have chosen Charlize Theron to wear this on a red carpet.  This would be the essence of beauty if it was done in luxurious silk chiffon.  The color is what would make this design stand out.  I can’t help but picture this gown in pale pink or soft silver.  I love the way the fabric cascades down the skirt, so a stunning stiletto would be a must!

Don’t be afraid to share your skills!  If you are afraid of rejection or don’t have the courage to share your talents, I have one suggestion for you….TRY!  If you are thinking of auditioning for the role in the town play or joining a sports team or entering your design in a competition, you never know what could happen unless you try.  Success comes from going for something!  Promgirl.net may not have a million dollar prize but we sure appreciate the talent that presented to us from our friends on Facebook.  Who knows, you might just be the next Fashion Designer!

Summer Makeup Tips – Vol. 1

Good Morning! And what a beautiful morning it is – summer is here, cancer’s are astrologically in power mode, and it may be time to change up your makeup regime – well that one may not sound as positive as the preceding two, but it is the truth. Inconvenient or not, as the weather changes and the temperature rises, your skin needs to be treated differently. Products are always being advertised as new and good-for-you, but how do you know which ones really are the best? An easy answer is, only you know yourself best, and you should know what your skin and body require, but there are some thing s that well, pretty much every girl should own – or at least have the knowledge that such products and items exist.

Today’s topic will focus on concealer:

With such a lovely change in times, most likely your daily schedule has changed too; no more school, no more homework, no more stress. As your schedule begins to lighten up, we are given more time to go out at night and inevitably, stay out later. Of course, this leads to the possibility of more dark circles and possibilities for imperfections – such as the dreaded, heat and sweat caused acne. The best way to fix these minor issues is with concealer. Now, there are many different kinds, types, and levels of concealer and finding the best one is usually a trial and error or a past down secret from mother to daughter or friend to friend. But, to make your life easier (as if summer hasn’t done that on its own) I’ve narrowed it down. A great makeup company and one you could always fall back on when in doubt is MAC. Their line is a classic staple for any fashionista but beware, with all the products MAC offers, it is easy to go overboard. Their Studio Finish Concealer is a “lightweight creamy formula,” which like all of MAC’s products are long lasting – something necessary in the long summer days that all too often become nights. A huge plus about this product is that it also contains a SPF of 35. This amongst all things is very important for women of all ages, especially when the sun is shining as it does in these beautiful months.

Looking to Trim Down for the Beach? Then Avoid a Liquid Cleanse

With summer officially here, and temperatures across large chunks of the U.S. jumping into the triple digit range, the time to hit the beach has definitely arrived. And as always, worries about swimsuit fits, cellulite and unsightly flab are coming along for the ride. With precious little time left before that trip to the shore many of us who have yet to shed as many pounds as we would like are starting to look for a fast track option. However before you grab that Master Cleanse or one of its competitors from the shelf you may want to read what a group of experts had to say to New Beauty Magazine about the benefits and risks of a liquid cleanse.

For example according to San Francisco nutritionist Rania Batayneh, “The body naturally detoxifies itself through the lungs, skin, liver and kidneys, so to do a juice cleanse or any other liquid cleanse is really unnecessary if you’re putting the proper nutrients in your body. The reality is that most people end up gaining the weight back.”

Ugh, depressing. And sadly the bad news does not end there, Ms. Batayneh and other nutritionists interviewed for the piece detail how the lack of protien taken in during a cleanse can actually slow your bodies metabolism, making it HARDER to loose the weight. Then you have to worry about the increased risk of binge eating once your free of the cleanse and about the fact that once you’ve committed to doing a cleanse stopping half-way through because of lack of willpower can leave you worse off than if you never started to begin with.

Long story short most liquid cleanses and the weight-loss they promise sound to good to be true because they are. So keep hitting the gym, ordering the salad and turning down the desert tray for now, rest assured you won’t be the only one. And if we ever do find a magic bullet for quick weight loss, don’t worry, we’ll post it here!

Long Sleeve Minis are the Latest Craze!

Jennifer Aniston in Kaufman Franco Long Sleeve Mini

Jennifer Aniston in Kaufman Franco Long Sleeve Mini

Long sleeve minis have returned!  Some other fashion trends have come and gone but long sleeve minis are finally making their come back.  This look was made popular in the 70’s and 80’s but has come full circle in a fabulous way.  Designers are having fun with this fashion, making long sleeve minis sexy, sleek and fashion forward.  Jennifer Aniston stepped out in a long sleeve mini with a plunging neckline to the Elle magazine’s 18th annual Women in Hollywood event in LA this past weekend and she is not alone!  The dress that Jennifer wore was originally designed to be a long gown but she had the designer, Kaufman Franco, cut it off to make a show stopping long sleeve mini.

Many celebrities have caught on to how much fun a long sleeve mini can be.  Kristin Cavallari, the new ambassador for Chinese Laundry, stepped out in a plain winter white long sleeve mini and looked stunning!  These women show us that we can be sexy and fashion forward even if we are covering up our arms.  The great part is that there is a long sleeve mini for any occasion.  There is the simple classic long sleeve mini or you can opt for the all beaded mini that is for a more extravagant night out.  Having fun with fashion is key, and I love to see designers and celebrities making this look attainable to the average consumer.

As popular as long sleeve minis are becoming, every girl needs one in her closet!  Have fun with your mini and pair it with a dramatic pair of stilettos or animal print boots.  And of course don’t forget your other accessories.  A Swarovski clutch paired with a plain mini can make a very stylish statement.   Be bold this season and step out in a sensational long sleeve mini for your next dinner date, prom or red carpet event!
