Tips on How to Choose the Right Homecoming Dresses for Your Personal Style

Homecoming is probably one of the most memorable moments of any teenager’s life, and if you want to be the girl that everyone remembers, you must choose the right dress. Oftentimes, finding and choosing among a ton of homecoming dresses can be very daunting. Fortunately, the process doesn’t exactly have to be all that intimidating. There are so many things that you can do to easily find the perfect dress that not only suits your body perfectly, but also compliments your personal style as well.

Tips on How to Choose the Right Homecoming Dresses for Your Personal Style

- Know your style

The very first thing that you need to do in order to find the perfect homecoming dress is to know what your style is, and what type of style you wish to exude in the dress you buy. There are so many types of styles you can go for: the seductive look, the conservative look, fun and sassy, and the traditional fairy-tale look. If your personal style is funky yet sophisticated, look for a dress that compliments both of those factors. Before spending time looking for a homecoming dress, picture exactly how you want the dress to look so that you don’t waste any time at all.

- Know your size

Secondly, know your size, or at least know what size you want your body to fit in before homecoming. If you are buying the dress online, understand that you may get a dress that is too big or too small, so be open minded about alterations. When buying a dress at an actual store, don’t be afraid to try on all sorts of dresses. Some dresses look way better when you wear them than when they’re on a hanger. So don’t judge the dress by your first glance, and try it on.

- Don’t be afraid to alter the dress

If you find a homecoming dress that has a close style to your dream dress, don’t be afraid to alter it to perfectly suit your personal style. Some girls are so afraid to do anything to a dress because of how much they paid for it, but tiny tweaks can really make the dress appear way better. If you’re too afraid to make big alterations, then have a friend help you out adding certain jewels or glitters to make it look more like your dream dress.

Tips on Saving Money on Homecoming Dresses

When on a budget, most girls think that their options are limited, but that is completely not true. Having a budget is always important, but you must also make sure you stay on that budget. Know that not all great dresses have to be expensive. There are so many great stores that retail amazing dresses for affordable prices, you just need to know where to look and when to look. Dresses become way cheaper during special seasons and holidays. So consider buying your dress during a busy fashion season because stores offer such crazy discounts and sales to save you plenty of money.

Paris Fashion Week: Eight Great Looks Straight From the Runway

Too often high fashion looks extreme as it comes down the runway. There are a number of ways, however to take the best elements of Parisian Fashion Week and incorporate them into your wardrobe for high fashion appeal. You can use these tips for your prom 2013 attire

Knee High Boots

Knee high boots look fantastic with skirts, leggings and skinny jeans. Look for boots with a smooth or slouching top, and interesting features like buckles and straps.

Oversized Coats

Oversized coats were first popular in the 1950s, and speak of luxury and excess. This trend has returned this season, and promises to bring with it a certain sense of nostalgia and grace.

Menswear

One of the major trends on the runway this year was using menswear in ladies apparel. Look for pearl snap shirts, gentlemen’s trousers, button down vests and argyle sweaters to sport this look.

Cable Knit Sweaters

Sweaters with interesting cable patterns will be big this fall. Look for sweaters with intricate knit patterning, cowl or turtleneck necklines and other interesting features.

Color Blocking with Bold Colors

Color blocking is pairing multiple bright, bold colors, in chunks of color. Match a bright colored shirt, a pencil skirt in a contrasting color, and a solid wallet to complete the look. Consider wearing animal print heals with the color blocking to really make a statement.

Tassels or balls along the neckline and hem

A number of fashions were seen in the fall line that had tassels, or ribbons with red balls, along the hem, or trimming the neckline. There are off-the rack designs sporting tassels and balls, or you can add trim to a favorite V-neck sweater or straight line skirt.

Metallic solids

A number of metallic suits made their way down the cat walk during Paris fashion week. While a metallic suit may have too much shine for the office or the classroom, pairing a metallic pair of slacks or a metallic blazer with more basic pieces is a great way to incorporate this look into your own wardrobe.

Sheer Layers

Models sported sheer apparel on the Parisian runway that would make your mother blush, but there are a number of more modest ways to don sheer garb. Consider pairing a sheer blouse with a vest, a sheer skirt with leggings, or sheer pants with a mini-skirt.

Trend Report

It’s a new year, which means it’s award season, which also means that the fabulous red carpet starlets are setting the precedent for the must have styles for current and upcoming prom seasons. All eyes are on the movers and shakers of the movie and music worlds, to see what their stylists decide to don them in so they can strut their stuff down the red carpet. A starlet’s dress can make or break their style status, just like your prom dress can make or break your night, so we all want to choose what’s right! Just from the Golden Globes alone, we can already spot some hot trends. Jennifer Lopez and Amy Adams both wore nude dresses, giving off a barely there illusion; whilst Salma Hayek and Sofia Vergara graced the scarlet carpet in black floor length gowns that sparkled. But one of the most refreshing trends was that of the printed gown!

The resurrection of prints and patterns was most prominent this past fall, a host of designs appeared on everything from t-shirts to pant suits. So, it is no surprise that the trend has finally trickled down and is slowly making an appearance on the red carpet. Kerry Washington donned an ethereal Giles gown that featured a horse printed skirt at the Django Unchained London premier, while Lucy Liu, Halle Berry, Ariel Winter and Sienna Miller all sported brightly printed frocks on the Golden Globes’ red carpet. From the pattern of pretty ladies adorned in printed and patterned creations thus far, we’re sure that the list will extend with the Oscars, Grammys and SAG Awards still set to air in the upcoming weeks.

5 Tips for Picking the Hottest Cuffs for 2013

Cuff bracelets have been on the fashion scene for months, and they are not going anywhere anytime soon. They are, however, getting a major makeover that shall transform the current ho-hum cuff into a luxe adornment. The trend is expected to erupt for spring and summer 2013, but there’s no harm taking a sneak peek at what’s to come in the arm candy category.

Location

One of the most obvious changes to the standard cuff is its location. No longer delegated to only the wrist, captivating cuffs are expected to show up on all areas of the arm and even the leg. Forget the thin and delicate anklet when you can wear a bold and brazen cuff wrapped atop your ankle latte, above a pair of killer shoes.

Colors

Neon colors struggled to make a cuff revival of late, but the struggle was lost in favor of powerful, classy colors to provide deep impact and contrast. That means no bright orange or hot pink, but plenty of punchy teals, gold, silver and other metallics.

Materials

Plastic, too, was struggling to once again dominate the cuff a la the 1980s, but it also went to the wayside in favor of magnificent metals. Pure gold and silver are always an option, but they are not the only option. Nickel is showing up as a hot new choice.

Design

If it looks smashing, dashing or otherwise eye-catching, by all means you can go for it! Studs, jewels, chains, links, laser cut-outs and fanciful embellishments are in, as long as they follow the trendy guidelines concerning the hottest cuffs’ materials and color. Butterfly or angel wings, raised gemstones and various geometric or animalistic shapes may all make the cut for the latest in cuffs.

Incorporation

Due to the bold and brazen nature of the new cuffs, it needs proper breathing room to make a statement on its own. That means wearing one with competing sleeves or hemlines is a no-no, as is piling on those that overlap and appear messy.

Wearing more than one cuff is certainly chic as long as the cuffs play off each other to create visual impact and interest. Wearing cuffs over long sleeves can work with a shirt that offsets the jewelry’s cut and color, but it is highly unlikely that wearing a cuff over a pant leg will be en vogue anytime soon.

Pop of Color

Filed under: Prom Advice — sorsonel @ 5:19 pm

Kim Kardashians red lipstick adds a pop of color!

Adding a pop of color has never been more fun! Celebs are mixing things up with their styles just by adding color. Take a traditional black dress and make it more fun by putting on some leopard stilettos and red lip stick. Winter white is a favorite of mine but can look dull by itself. Spice up your winter white outfit with colorful accessories and hot pink lips.

There are certain times of the year to make sure you don’t mix certain colors. As we approach Halloween don’t scare everyone with your wardrobe. Black and orange are both great colors to wear but don’t wear them together. By mixing black and orange around this time of the year, you may get mistaken for a pumpkin. Keep your fall looks going by adding some yellow to your orange outfit and you will look vibrant and fashion forward. It is also getting close to the Christmas season and the last thing you want to do is look like a Christmas ornament. Don’t pair your red blouse with a green clutch or emerald earrings. Make your red blouse work by accessorizing with a black bag and shoes. If you want to stay in the Christmas spirit, red and gold always look regal together.

Try something new! This is the time to experiment with color. Throw in a pop of purple or some fierce fuchsia in your collection for fall 2012. Even though color is in, make sure you look in the mirror before you step out on the town. Color is great when done correct, but don’t look crazy. Have fun with fashion and try a pop of color!

White is all the rage!

Filed under: Prom Advice — sorsonel @ 3:31 pm

Taylor Swift in all white

Years ago an unspoken rule of only wearing white between Memorial Day and Labor Day came to pass.  The rebels of fashion that have broken that rule!  We saw white on the runways of New York fashion week, the MTV Video Music Awards, and the front covers of the hottest fall magazines.

There is nothing more stunning than white done right!  Taylor Swift stepped on the VMA’s red carpet wearing an all white J.Mendel suit.  Although it was a serious look for the VMA’s, she looked amazing in all white.  Model Miranda Kerr stepped out in a white wrap dress paired with a brown belt.  What makes these all white ensembles work for fall or winter is that they are not wearing white shoes with these gorgeous outfits.  A great way to wear white in the fall or winter is to wear colorful shoes, jewelry or makeup.  Make your outfit appropriate for the season by simply putting on some red lipstick and stilettos.  Or like Miranda Kerr, throw a brown belt on and your ready to go!

Black and white is a great alternative to transition into fall.  Black and white is such a classic look.  Vanessa Hudgens wore a tea-length black and white dress to a photo call for her new movie Spring Breakers.  This dress by Blumarine looks like something that you would have seen Audrey Hepburn wearing years ago.  There is something so sexy yet sophisticated about black and white clothing.  It is timeless and looks great on any girl at any age.

White can be worn in so many ways.  Don’t just think of white as a summer color anymore, wear white for all the seasons.  Have fun with fashion and wear what makes you feel fabulous.   Just remember no white shoes in the winter but make sure you incorporate some white in your wardrobe because white is all the rage!

6 Pieces Every Girl Should Have in Her Closet

Little Black Dress

Little Black Dress

There are pieces of clothing that every woman should consider purchasing as the basis of their wardrobe. These pieces are versatile and can be mixed and matched with almost any wardrobe element to create really interesting and flattering outfits for every occasion.

Good Butt Jeans

Every girl should have a pair of jeans in the closet that make her feel amazing. The jeans should fit her shape well, and provide a flattering overall line. Girls who have little figure should look toward skinny jeans, which accentuate the curves they do have. Girls with a lot of thigh should look for a bootcut jean that flairs from the thigh down to minimize their problem area. Finally, every girl should look for a pair of jeans that looks good in the mirror when they look at their backside!

Little Black Dress

It is classic, at least in part, because if its versatility. Everyone looks good in a little black dress; the color is slimming and suitable for a wide variety of occasions. The right little black dress is just as suitable for a funeral as it is a party. Purchase a little black dress that accentuates your shape and you will pull it out of your closet again and again.

Cardigan

Cardigans are often overlooked as a wardrobe staple, but they are absolutely essential to extending a summer outfit’s wear. Pairing a cardigan with a cute summer tank top or sun dress both makes the outfit more appropriate for wear at school or the office, but also makes them more appropriate for wear in fall and spring when the weather is chilly.

Cami

Though people often wear lace trimmed tank tops, or camis, as standalone articles during the summer, they are actually a vital and versatile piece of every woman’s wardrobe. Camisoles can be worn under sheer garments, under shirts with low necklines, or under plain t-shirts to add color and to create a layered effect. It is a good idea to have camis in basic colors like black and white, but they can also be fun to wear in brighter colors.

Statement Piece

Every woman should have at least one statement piece in their wardrobe. Statement pieces attract attention when worn. They typically feature bold prints and colors, and have a shape that is flattering. Consider a bold colored dress, or blouse, as a place to start.

How to Primp without Acting Like a Diva

You want your makeup, hair and outfit to be as flawless as possible, but you also don’t want to come across as a diva while you do it. A few sneaky dos and don’ts can help your look stay fresh without pegging you as a self-absorbed snob.

Do take a bathroom break. Bathrooms are the proper places to check your hair, makeup, panty lines or anything else you want to check while out in public. That’s why the places have mirrors, after all! Taking dozens of bathroom breaks doesn’t cut it. Besides, your date and pals may interpret your constant bathroom trips as you being sick or doing drugs. A couple of bathroom breaks are OK, especially when you first enter a place or after a few drinks or a meal.

Don’t admire yourself in every shiny, reflective surface you pass. That screams diva like nothing else can! You also want to refrain from pulling out a compact mirror at the bar or dinner table or applying makeup in either location. That tactic screams tacky! Besides, it could get kind of messy if someone bumps into you at the bar or your get food in your face powder.

Do sneak peeks in less obvious items. Spot-check your makeup in the reflection in your smartphone.  Pretend you’re gazing deeply into a wishing well or pond so you can check your hair. The sides of shiny vehicles or their windows can be a prime way to sneakily check your reflection, as can shiny bus stop signs or even your silver-plated, thick cuff bracelet!

Don’t primp and drive. Yes, your car may be a private place, but it’s not the place to adjust your makeup if you’re driving. Distracted driving is one of the leading causes of accidents. If you fear your makeup needs adjusting, just think how much worse it would need adjusting if you get in a crash. Primping as a passenger is fine. After all, it’s probably why cars come with lighted vanity mirrors above the passenger seat! Be careful if the ride is bouncy or the turns are sharp. You don’t need an eyeliner pencil stuck in your eye.

Safety should always come before looks, although looks can take a close second. This counts as long as the looks aren’t constant and they preferably come from people other than yourself.

What Goes Around Comes Around!

Chic Fashion From The Past

It has been said in fashion that styles always come back around. This has been so true for 2012. High waist pants that take us back to the 70’s, neon novelty pieces that bring back the 80’s and even baggy pants that we wish stayed in the 90’s have been seen on all the runways. Fashion is always evolving but there is only so much you can do with it before designers start recycling styles from the past.

Let’s start with the 70’s. Gwen Stefani and Kim Kardashian have been seen around Hollywood rockin the high-waist jeans. This look is really cute with a blouse tucked in, and a pair of high heels. Take the 70’s look a step further and go with the poker straight hair for a night out. One thing that I hope doesn’t make its way back around is bell-bottoms and super short shorts for men. Some things are better left in the past! A simple way to incorporate this look into your everyday is to throw on a pair of peace sign earrings, a tie die shirt or some wedges. Remember peace, love and freedom when putting together your 70’s ensemble.

Next is the 80’s. Miley Cyrus has been causing a stir with her crazy new hair doo, cut off tanks and multi colored spandex pants. Now that is channeling the 80’s! There are other fun ways to play with fashion from the 80s. Painting your nails is a fun cheap way to express your 80’s style. You can do a full neon nail, neon tips or outline your nail in neon. Another easy way is to take a shirt from your closet and cut it up to make it a belly shirt or an off the shoulder. Leggings are also on every corner and come in so many colors and patterns that it won’t be hard to achieve the 80’s look you desire.

Last is the 90’s. Hip-hop made its debut during the 90’s and everyone sported wind breakers and large chain necklaces. Stars like Rihanna has graced the covers of magazines wearing a big gold chain and made it look so cool. Other celebs like David Beckham been seen wearing wind breakers and track suits. Let’s face it, David Beckham wearing a track suit makes the 90’s look extremely hot!

There are so many ways you can play with fashion. With access to the internet and shops on every corner, it is not hard to bring around some fantastic fashion from the past without breaking the bank. Feel free to be the individual you are and play with looks from all the eras. Fashion is meant to be fun! So tease your hair, put on those neon stilettos, and rock your wind pants because in fashion….what goes around come around!

Tips for Wearing a Bustle at Your Formal Affair

If you are wondering if that super-long, super-full gown you have your eye on will still allow you to still dance the night away, the answer may come in the form of a bustle. A bustle is a gathering of material from an excessively long or full skirt, the She Knows website explains. An elaborate ball gown may come equipped with one so you can move and groove without stumbling and tripping.

When to use it. The main time to use the bustle on your dress is when you need or want the ultimate freedom of movement. Although your movements may still be a bit restricted just because, well, you’re wearing an elaborate gown, they will be less restricted when excess material is tied up and out of the way.

Gowns that feature bustles typically have small ties or straps you secure around the extra material to hold in place and detach to let it back down.

When not to use it. Making a dramatic entrance, getting your formal photos snapped or sitting down for extended periods are not the best time for a bustle. You’ll want the full length and glory of your gown exposed for dramatic entrances and photos. And the bustle can get in the way when sitting for extended periods.

Once you bustle up your ball gown, don’t expect it to un-bustle into its former glory. The fabric may be a bit wrinkled or crinkled upon its release, which means saving the bustle for the second half of the night may be a good idea.

Sizzle in Silver

Lea Michele in a silver short dress

Let’s face it, after Lady Gaga wore a meat dress the world realized anything goes!  Fashion has never been so varied and celebrities are wearing whatever they can to stand out.  With so many fantastic colors out there, one color stands out in the crowd this summer…silver!  Silver is on all the red carpets and in all the runways shows.  Designers are making silver pants, shorts, tops and dresses.  Lea Michele stood out at the 2012 Teen Choice Awards in a structured Atelier Versace short dress.  She was right on point with this silver mini.   She even took it a step further and paired her dress with silver stilettos. You an find many short silver dresses  in the 2012 Fall collection.

Finding the right shade of silver is important.  Typically brunettes look better in silver but there is a wide range of silver for girls with other hair and skin tones.  Blondes be aware!  Silver is not an easy color to wear, so start with bright silver.  The duller the silver, the more it will wash you out.  If you feel like silver doesn’t look good on you, try using it in an accessory.

Silver is so much fun and is also a great accent color.  Spice up a boring black outfit with a sassy silver clutch or statement necklace.  Put on some silver bangle bracelets with a white tee and your ready for a night out!  You can play with your nail designs by adding some silver tips to your mani or a funky metallic silver design.  Silver has also made a comeback with cosmetics.  Line your eyes with silver shadow or eye liner to bring out your tan this summer.

Always remember to start simple and play with silver to match your personality.  Fashion is fun and there are a lot of great places to find something silver at a reasonable price.  Don’t’ be afraid to try something new and be a little fashion forward this season.  Silver is here to stay, so be on trend this summer and sizzle in silver!

Tips on Avoiding the Undergarments Fashion Police

Your undergarments can be just as important as your evening wear when it comes to looking elegant in your formal gown.

Cut. The cut of your undergarments is crucial, especially that of your bra. Picking a cut that matches the cut of the gown is a must to avoid the horrible fashion mistake of exposed bra straps. If any part of your bra is showing, you need a different bra. Strapless gowns require strapless bras while backless numbers may need inserts or other support. Don’t go without a bra if you need the support.

Support. Many celebrities opt for added support beyond the underwire bra. Padded panties are en vogue for creating a shapely derriere while stretchy undergarments can help keep the body slim, svelte and lump-free under an especially form-fitting dress like a sheath or a mermaid gown.

Color. The color of your undergarments especially comes into play if you have a semi-sheer or light-colored gown. The outline of your under garments should not be part of your outfit. Consider a slip or even a nude body stocking if your dress is particularly sheer or see-through.

Panty lines. Panty lines are nearly as bad as exposed bra straps when it comes to ruining a look. Make sure you try on the specific pair of underwear you intend to wear beneath your dress to make sure you avoid them.

The wrong fit, cut or color of your undergarment can totally ruin your look, but these tips can help you avoid the faux pas and, more importantly, the underwear fashion police!

Sundresses are hot for summer!

Sundresses are hot for summer!

Summer is a great time to show some skin.  With hot humid weather, the best way to dress is in light materials and minimal clothing.  Sundresses are essential for summer.  You can throw them on over a bathing suit, slip into one for dinner, or relax in one on your back porch.  No matter the occasion, a sundress is cute and comfortable.

Find a dress that is flattering on you.  As everyone knows, females are all different shapes and sizes.  If you are thinner, you have more options but don’t go with an oversized sundress or you will look frumpy.  If you are curvier, find a sundress with some support.  If you need the support on the top, they make sundresses with built in bras.  If you need the support through your mid-section, find one that wraps around your waist or is ruched so it will flatter your shape.  And no matter what your size or shape, having a flowing bottom always looks nice.

Don’t be afraid to try bright colors.  Neon’s are hotter than ever this summer.  If you have a tan, don’t be afraid to wear a bright yellow or electric lime sundress.  If neon’s don’t match your personality, try a bright turquoise blue or fantastic fuchsia.

Also, remember to accessorize!  No matter the color, great accessories can change the entire look of your sundress.  Do seashell accessories for a more casual beach look.  Or add some Swarovski chandeliers to take your day look into the evening.  Shoes are another great way to accessorize with your sundress.  Throw on a pair of flip flops and you are ready to run errands.  But you can take it a step further and throw on a pair of stilettos to go dance the night away.

There are so many fun ways you can wear a sundress.  Bust out your shades and flip flops and head to the mall.  You can find cute ones in all price ranges and sizes.  A sundress this summer is a must have, so be sure to have a few in your closet for any event that pops up!

Big Hair is Back!

Rihanna with big red hair

They always say what goes around comes around, and this is so true for big hair!  We live in a generation where anything goes, but people are running out of new creative ways to style their hair.  When all options have been tried, it’s time to go back in time.

The 80’s era is making its reappearance in all areas of fashion and hair styles are right on that trend.  Rocker style mohawk’s are being seen on runways around the world, not only on men but women too.  Even celebrities are caught wearing big curls and funky pony tails.  And it’s not just big hair that we are seeing again, people are also playing with color more than ever.  Katie Perry has been seen with blown out blue hair, Rihanna was caught in red and Beyonce has looked glamorous with gold.  Hair is getting big and bold!

If you haven’t experimented with big hair, now is the time.  If you have natural curls, this whole “big hair” movement is going to be way easier for you.  A great way to get a beachy look is to towel dry your hair a little after you get out of the shower (or ocean) to soak up some water excess water, but don’t comb it!   Next take a little hair gel or mouse and evenly distribute it throughout your whole head of hair.  Last spray a little flexible hairspray evenly and crunch your hair in your hands as you blow dry it.  The little bit of mouse and hairspray will hold your curls together just enough so it doesn’t frizz but when you are done, you will have beautiful big hair.  Also, curly hair takes to hot roller so have fun trying those too.  If you have straight hair, this may be a little harder.  Try braiding your hair while it is damp and sleep on it.  Wake up the next day, take out the braids, flip your head over and apply some hair spray.

Whatever texture your hair is, one key to big hair is the right hairspray.  Find a product that works for you.  If you aren’t sure where to start, ask a hair dresser or read a beauty magazine like Cosmo.  Have fun trying new things with your hair styles and next time you go out, Go Big because big hair is back!

Pointy Toed Shoes are Poppin!

Emma Stone wearing pointy stilettos

Shoes can make or break and outfit.  This season’s trend aim’s toward the pointy toed shoes!  Even though it is summer, celebrities on all the red carpets are sporting stilettos with fierce pointy toes.  Emma Stone has been caught on the red carpet tour for The Amazing Spider-Man wearing some sensational pointed shoes.  Gwen Stefani is never behind on her style.  She has some pointy toed high heels in her own L.A.M.B shoe collection and has been seen wearing them around town.   This shoe is getting hotter and hotter as summer goes on, so here is the low down on the wonderful pointy toed trend.

A stiletto that comes to a point can be flattering in many ways.  The first reason this look works is because it is a shoe style that elongates your legs.  You can be petite or tall and it will always make your legs looks stunning and longer than usual.  It will give you that extra inch, which will help you pull off more hemlines with your clothing choice.  Another reason that pointy toed shoes look fabulous is because they make a statement.  If you choose a high heel with a pointed toe, your shoes will pop!  You will catch everyone’s eye and it can make your outfit complete.  You can also find this style in a range of prices and colors.  If you are on a budget, you can pick up a pair of pointy toes for under $60.                                                                                       This is a shoe everyone can enjoy.

If you are afraid of this style shoe making your foot look too big, you’re wrong.  Be fashion forward next time you are shopping and choose a pointy toed shoe.  You can start with a basic color to work into your wardrobe, like nude or black.  Once you realize how awesome your pointed stilettos are you can work some funky ones in.  Step outside of the box with some neon’s, studs, or strappy pointed shoes.  Catch this trend because pointy toed shoes are poppin!

Finding the Next Fashion Designer

Design Contestant of Promgirl.net Facebook

There is so much unnoticed talent from strangers that you pass every day.  People around the world have talent to write, sing, design, etc.  but are never given the opportunity to share their gifts.  Giving them the opportunity to express themselves is the first step to finding the next designer.  Promgirl.net started a design competition on Facebook and within a few days there were dress designs that would impress Valentino, Marchesa or even Vera Wang.

Most sketches were presented in black and white, which left room to create the colors and fabrics in our own minds.  The dress I chose to feature reminded me of someone who was elegant and beautiful at any age.  If I was a stylist, I would have chosen Charlize Theron to wear this on a red carpet.  This would be the essence of beauty if it was done in luxurious silk chiffon.  The color is what would make this design stand out.  I can’t help but picture this gown in pale pink or soft silver.  I love the way the fabric cascades down the skirt, so a stunning stiletto would be a must!

Don’t be afraid to share your skills!  If you are afraid of rejection or don’t have the courage to share your talents, I have one suggestion for you….TRY!  If you are thinking of auditioning for the role in the town play or joining a sports team or entering your design in a competition, you never know what could happen unless you try.  Success comes from going for something!  Promgirl.net may not have a million dollar prize but we sure appreciate the talent that presented to us from our friends on Facebook.  Who knows, you might just be the next Fashion Designer!

Summer Makeup Tips – Vol. 1

Good Morning! And what a beautiful morning it is – summer is here, cancer’s are astrologically in power mode, and it may be time to change up your makeup regime – well that one may not sound as positive as the preceding two, but it is the truth. Inconvenient or not, as the weather changes and the temperature rises, your skin needs to be treated differently. Products are always being advertised as new and good-for-you, but how do you know which ones really are the best? An easy answer is, only you know yourself best, and you should know what your skin and body require, but there are some thing s that well, pretty much every girl should own – or at least have the knowledge that such products and items exist.

Today’s topic will focus on concealer:

With such a lovely change in times, most likely your daily schedule has changed too; no more school, no more homework, no more stress. As your schedule begins to lighten up, we are given more time to go out at night and inevitably, stay out later. Of course, this leads to the possibility of more dark circles and possibilities for imperfections – such as the dreaded, heat and sweat caused acne. The best way to fix these minor issues is with concealer. Now, there are many different kinds, types, and levels of concealer and finding the best one is usually a trial and error or a past down secret from mother to daughter or friend to friend. But, to make your life easier (as if summer hasn’t done that on its own) I’ve narrowed it down. A great makeup company and one you could always fall back on when in doubt is MAC. Their line is a classic staple for any fashionista but beware, with all the products MAC offers, it is easy to go overboard. Their Studio Finish Concealer is a “lightweight creamy formula,” which like all of MAC’s products are long lasting – something necessary in the long summer days that all too often become nights. A huge plus about this product is that it also contains a SPF of 35. This amongst all things is very important for women of all ages, especially when the sun is shining as it does in these beautiful months.

Looking to Trim Down for the Beach? Then Avoid a Liquid Cleanse

With summer officially here, and temperatures across large chunks of the U.S. jumping into the triple digit range, the time to hit the beach has definitely arrived. And as always, worries about swimsuit fits, cellulite and unsightly flab are coming along for the ride. With precious little time left before that trip to the shore many of us who have yet to shed as many pounds as we would like are starting to look for a fast track option. However before you grab that Master Cleanse or one of its competitors from the shelf you may want to read what a group of experts had to say to New Beauty Magazine about the benefits and risks of a liquid cleanse.

For example according to San Francisco nutritionist Rania Batayneh, “The body naturally detoxifies itself through the lungs, skin, liver and kidneys, so to do a juice cleanse or any other liquid cleanse is really unnecessary if you’re putting the proper nutrients in your body. The reality is that most people end up gaining the weight back.”

Ugh, depressing. And sadly the bad news does not end there, Ms. Batayneh and other nutritionists interviewed for the piece detail how the lack of protien taken in during a cleanse can actually slow your bodies metabolism, making it HARDER to loose the weight. Then you have to worry about the increased risk of binge eating once your free of the cleanse and about the fact that once you’ve committed to doing a cleanse stopping half-way through because of lack of willpower can leave you worse off than if you never started to begin with.

Long story short most liquid cleanses and the weight-loss they promise sound to good to be true because they are. So keep hitting the gym, ordering the salad and turning down the desert tray for now, rest assured you won’t be the only one. And if we ever do find a magic bullet for quick weight loss, don’t worry, we’ll post it here!

Travel Mistakes to Avoid This Summer

As summer has obviously arrived (temperatures may exceed 100 degrees today!), vacations and traveling are on the brain, well when the heat isn’t. Short day trips are always fun and easy. There are no travel preparations, besides maybe the picnic lunch and a water bottle or two – and if you are driving, don’t forget to fill the gas tank. For the most part, during summer, we want to go on longer vacations, ones that do require travel plans. If you are anything like me, going away for a week means some serious planning, you know, outfit wise. Between laying out your clothes, trying to narrow down your number of outfits, to narrowing it down to only two pairs of pants, then that one sweater in case of unexpected chills at night, and then finally what shoes to bring! For me, once I step foot into the airport, I want all my worries packed away – or at least sitting patiently behind my front door until I have to face them again in one weeks time.

Readers, does it take you as long, and as much preparation to travel?

So to even further insure a relaxing vacation, from start to finish a.k.a. the plane rides, be sure you know what you need for the airport as well as being prepared for the airport itself. The obvious ones are your ID and ticket. And of course, the infamous maximum of 3ounces per liquid baring container (this is because more than 3 ounces of a liquid can somehow turn into a bomb at 30,000 feet up…I think). Tip; just go to CVS or some other store of similar genre and buy travel size bottles. Also, people always bring their tweezers on board; they will get thrown away at security – conclusion, if your uni-brow won’t grow back in a week, leave the tweezers at home (if you can’t bear to be without them, then spend the extra $3 for a new pair when you arrive at your destination).

This topic brings us to ever so great traveling conundrum; to check or to carry-on? It seems like a pretty obvious answer, at least for those of us who know we cannot afford to replace even a pair of undies if they were to get lost (thanks economy!). However, the more fortunate people – the ones who can also afford to go on longer than just a week vacation – often have more luggage and are forced to, dun-dun-duunn, check their bags. Well, if you are facing the unfortunate scenario of checking your luggage, be sure you have what you need immediately in your carry-on. More importantly, if you have irreplaceable items, those should go in a carry-on bag as well. Unfortunately, this article was a little late for a certain British Duchess. The duchess I speak of is none other than the British Duchess who is now famously known for losing her bag of fine, irreplaceable jewels on a flight out of Glasgow Airport, six years ago! Even though she filed a police report and took all the proper precautions to recuperate her luggage, apparently being a royal doesn’t help. Most of her jewels were recovered just before they were about to be auctioned off in a Scottish auction! Yes, the airport failed to follow up with the report, and when the jewels were recovered, the airport “sold them to a Glasgow diamond trader for less than $7,500 and donated the proceeds to charity,” says spokeswoman Sharon Morrison. The Duchess got a lawyer involved and now the jewels will be returned to her. The Duchess, now 68, made a statement saying “I’m absolutely amazed, I thought that after six years I’d lost them forever. [The jewels] were absolutely irreplaceable, so I’m incredibly delighted. The tiara was a Victorian family one and the necklace was given to me for my 21st birthday. So everything was very special. When I spotted the brooch, I couldn’t believe it.”

Tips on Avoiding the Jewelry Fashion Police

The fashion police can be after you in a jiffy if you pile on too much or the wrong type of jewelry. They will also be at your door if you go for anything plastic or violate one of these general jewelry laws.

Competition. The first rule of jewelry is to make sure it does not compete with your dress or with other jewelry pieces. One piece of statement-making jewelry is enough; don’t go nuts with a big, bold necklace and big, bold matching earrings.

Color and materials.   Silver and gold are at the forefront of the jewelry material list, but you can also opt for white gold, pewter, gemstones, a velvet choker or even high-end beads. Your dress dictates what hue and materials work best. Slim, slinky gowns go well with thin, delicate jewelry while thicker materials may work with heftier gems. Never wear plastic, no matter how fun and colorful your dress may be.

Pieces.  A strapless sweetheart neckline may speak for itself and work best with dangling earrings rather than a necklace. The same goes for an elaborate or embellished bodice. A simple bodice, on the other hand, may scream for a necklace accent, in which case your earrings should be small and subtle enough not to detract from the look.

Style.  Your jewelry style should match your dress style, with vintage dresses going for antique silver or gold, and modern gowns opting for a sleek or even shiny look.

Your jewelry can dazzle as grand as your gown as long as you keep these simple tips in mind.
